Highlights of this tour.

Join this 15 day challenge and help a Tanzanian family build a new home and say goodbye to bare earth floors, leaking roofs and the threat of entire walls collapsing - forever. Working together with a homepartner family, the local community and skilled local builders, you will assist in constructing a new home. You may be doing a variety of activities from laying bricks to putting on the roof. In Tanzania, homes are 21-48 sq metres depending on the size of the family in need. Bricks for the walls are made from either fired clay or soil, stabilised with cement or sand and cement. The wooden roof trusses are painted with used engine oil to protect them from insect damage, and the roof is made of either corrugated iron sheets or cement/sand tiles. On your rest days, you will spend time with the local community, learning about their striking culture and customs and exploring some of the local sights.

The benefits you bring in making this journey.

The need for decent housing in Tanzania is enormous. Many village families live in ‘tembe' houses, made of mud stuck to a wooden frame. The houses have dirt floors and thatched roofs, with rarely enough space for the family size. These structures require a tremendous amount of maintenance, and whole walls often collapse in the rainy season. This type of housing encourages an explosion of unwelcome visitors who bring health and safety risks with them: termites damaging the wood, insects and snakes in the thatch, rats tunnelling through the mud to find the food stores, and ticks and other parasites lying in wait for human hosts. Adding to the already great health risks, many families have to share latrines, but more often they do not have access to a sanitary latrine at all. In urban areas, whole families often live in one or two rooms, sharing inadequate ‘facilities' with ten or more other families. We have been working in Tanzania since 1986.
